SEMINAR ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF KALADY
REPORT
As a preliminary process to bring to the attention of the state as well as the central governments the need for developments in Kalady, the birthplace of Adi Sankara & the globally known pilgrimage centre, the Sree Sankara Cultural Foundation organised the first Seminar on the 26th of April 2009, at 2.00pm at the Sree Sankara Natyamandapam. The four-hour long seminar was a part of the Sree Sankarajayati Celebrations.
Adv. Jose Thettayil (MLA Kalady) inaugurated the Seminar. In the absence of Smt. Baby Paulose (President, Kalady gramapanchayath), Dr. K.M. Rmachandran (Principal, Sree Sankara College, Kalady) presided over the function. Sri. N.K. Raju (The depty. Town planer) delivered the keynote address.
Sri. K.R. Rajeev (The depty. Town planner) felicitated the function. Prof. P.V. Peetambaran (promoter, Sree Sankara cultural foundation, SSD, Kalady welcomed the gathering & Sri. N. Sajeevan, the convener proposed the vote of thanks.
Major suggestions made during the Seminar
1. Construct a bypass road in Kalady to improve commutation & avoid traffic jam.
2. Convert Kalady into a platform for spiritual union.
3. Convert the "Mutala-kkadavu" into cultural platform.
4. Build a History Museum in Kalady.
5. Make the activities of the Sree Sankaracharya Sanskrit University more democratic. The university must study the social problems, organise seminars useful to discuss eugenics and related matters, implement plans for democratic approach to education, there by becoming an integral part of Kalady.
6. Install the statue of Sree Sankara in Kalady town.
7. Declare Kalady an international pilgrimage centre.
8. Arrange boarding & lodging apt for the pilgrims.
9. Implement the declaration made by the government that 'The Ādi Sankara day' will be observed as The 'Philosophy day.' - Tatwajnanadinam.
10. Interconnect in a semicircular form, the Kottamam, Chengal &Udumbuzha water ways, which run closer to the Kalady town, to solve the problem of water scarcity.
11. Relocate with immediate effect the slaughter house that's existing at the center of the Kalady town.
12. Construct a new bridge parallel to the Kalady bridge.
13. Nullify the lack of resources available to the scholars working in the Sankara movement.
14. Stop the unscientific way of scooping sand from the river sores.
15. Complete the projects declared by the government in a time bound manner.
16. Do a proper follow-up in the implementation of projects.
17. Rename the Nedumbasseri International Airport as 'The Ādi -Sankara International Airport.'
18. Open the shutters of high level dams during specific periods to mobilise enough water & sand to the river Poorna. Construct bunds wherever necessary.
19. Construct a high-tech park on the banks of Periyar.
20. Take immediate measures to avoid water logging in Kalady town.
21. Fix appropriate sign-boards to locate the 'Adi-Sankara Janmabhoomi temple.'
22. Stop any activity likely to pollute the R.Poorna.
23. Construct a 'Sree-Sankara Arch' on the M.C. Road, closer to the private bus station.
24. Take measures to ensure that the street lamps work in proper conditions.
25. Impose changes in the minds of those authenticated to implement the development programmes.
26. Stop parking vehicles on the Sringeri & the police station roads.
27. Form a "Periyar Protection Authority."
28. Kalady must be totally pollution-free. A culture that emphasise on 'love of nature' must evolve in Kalady. Garbage disposal, cleaning of gutters, preventing the use of plastic, arranging dustbins must be done as an effective part of making the region pollution free.
29. Allow fare stage at Kalady to the superfast KSRTC buses.
30. Only 30% the funds allotted to the development activities of Kalady is actually used. Take strict measures to ensure that proper utilisation is made.
31. When a study of the development in similar regions in other states is made, the'development in Kalady is quite insufficient. Take apt measures to nullify this disproportionate phenomenon.
32. Build a 'Rice-bio-park' that would be useful to the farmers.
33. Build libraries in the names of Sree Sankara & Aagamaanda Swamikal.
34. Develop the 'Manikkamangalam tura project' to attract more tourists.
35. Construct wide foot-paths on either sides of the Malayattoor road to give it a royal facelift.
36. Implement the plan for 'The Advaita Veethi."
37. All the institutions in the name of Sree Sankara must work in unison to draw a blueprint for the further development of Kalady.
38. Construct a ring-road in Kalady.
39. Ensure the tourist information centre works in an efficient functional manner.
40. Widen the canal road on the southern side of the Sree Sankara Sankrit University to facilitate two-way traffic.
41. Widen the existing road leading to the market & build a modernized commercial complex.
42. Relocate the existing market closer to the private bus station.
43. Ensure that the supply of pure water and cleaning procedures are done punctually.
44. Take measures to ensure that the suggestions made in the seminar organised three years back under the combined auspices of the KILA, the district Panchayath Block & the Panchayath are made available & implemented.
45. Declare Kalady as a "Divine Village."
46. Beautify the area where the old Panchayath building did exist. Approach banks, media institutions, industries etc. to mobilize funds for the said activities.
47. Relocate the taxi stand on the Kanjoor Road closer to the private bus station. Relocate the sales counter of the beverages corporation sufficiently away from the main residential colony.
48. A specific percentage of the tax collected by the Panchayath must be kept separately to keep the Kalady town & the private bust stand neat.
49. Organise "Light & Sound Show" programmes under the auspices of the Tourism Promotion council.
50. Build a sports complex including a playground.
51. Install at the 'Mutalakkadavu' a sculpture delineating the scene of Sree Sankara being captured by a crocodile.
52. Take protective measures to preserve the 'picture-wall' along the boundary of the university campus.
53. Construct an open-air theatre on the northern side of the private bus station.
54. Establish a technical school.
55. Establish hotel complexes in Kalady as extension projects of the Inter National Airport.
56. Begin a super-specialty hospital seeking co-operation of the Ādi Sankara Trust.
57. Construct a walkway from the Kalady town to the Ādi Sankara temple. Extend the development programmes up to the Sree Sankara College.
58. The Kalady Mahasivaratri celebrations along with a commercial festival should be made a ten-day long programme.

1. The development of Kalady, the birth place of Ādi Sankaracharya must be approached with large vision.
2. It must be viewed as one far above the exclusive interests of cast, religion & politics.
3. So far no one has declared the Advaitabhoomis as an Inter National pilgrimage centre.
4. What stand as obstacle to the construction of the Advaitaveedhi is the fact that the concerned land owners are not willing to part with their land needed for the project. The government has sanctioned Rs.90 lacs for this project.
5. Kalady & Malayattur have been declared as tourists destination points.
6. Rs. 1 crore has been allotted to make necessary structures to protect the sand area utilised for the Shivaratri celebrations.
7. Attempts are in progress to construct a park on 2 acres of land on the banks of Periyar.
